Primary Health Solutions is taking an innovative approach to laboratory logistics with its new Drone-Enabled Lab Courier Program. Supported by a $50,000 Community Health Entrepreneur Challenge grant from Advocates for Community Health and UnitedHealthcare Community & State. PHS is deploying two medical drones in Butler County to transport laboratory specimens directly from health centers to its centralized PCR laboratory.
The program is designed to reduce transportation costs, save staff time and help speed up diagnostic turnaround times—allowing providers to receive results sooner and make faster, more informed care decisions. PHS estimates the initiative could save approximately $100,000 in annual transportation expenses and nearly 1,000 staff hours.
Beyond efficiency, the drone program also provides a reliable transportation option during severe weather and other emergencies when traditional ground travel may be difficult. By embracing emerging technology to address real-world healthcare challenges, PHS is demonstrating how innovation can improve operations, strengthen community resilience and ultimately support better patient care.
