For Katey Jerger, R.D., L.D., C.L.S., nutrition is deeply personal. At just eight years old, Katey was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes—a life-changing moment that introduced her to carb counting, daily injections and the overwhelming reality of managing a chronic condition. Early in her diagnosis, she began working with a dietitian who helped her see something powerful: even with a new diagnosis, food could still be enjoyed, shared and celebrated.
That experience sparked Katey’s passion for becoming a dietitian. She knew she wanted to support others facing similar challenges and help them find balance, confidence and joy around food. Today, at Primary Health Solutions, Katey works with patients navigating all kinds of life changes—from new diagnoses to growing families—always meeting them where they are and focusing on small, achievable steps.
Katey believes food is medicine because it does more than nourish the body. Food brings connection, comfort and joy—helping heal not only our physical health, but also our minds, families and communities.
Whether she’s working with new moms through Butler County WIC or supporting individuals adjusting to busy schedules, her approach is grounded in reassurance: progress doesn’t have to happen all at once. One small change can make a lasting difference.
Her most common advice is simple and encouraging—start small. With so many health trends and messages competing for attention, Katey reminds patients that sustainable change comes from manageable choices, like swapping full-fat foods for lower-fat options, choosing frozen vegetables or replacing one less nutritious snack with fruit.
On busy days, Katey practices what she teaches. Her go-to snack is homemade peanut butter protein balls—easy to make ahead, packed with protein and whole grains and just sweet enough to feel like a treat.
That balance of nourishment and enjoyment is reflected in the recipe she shares—a simple, family-friendly option designed to support health while fitting into real life, one step at a time.
